WATERMEDIA MONOTYPE WORKSHOP:

Instructor
Cindy Blain

Description
Learn all about making monotypes with watercolor and other watermedia! Explore the unexpected and unusual effects possible with the "painterly print". This class will introduce you to several ways to create monotypes -- with and without an etching press. Many artists quietly made monotypes for years as a way to renew and refresh their other artwork -- artists such as Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, and Nathan Oliveira. This experimental medium can also help you loosen up with your watercolors and learn to use more paint (and less water).

What's the difference? Monotype is a unique process in which the artist uses a combination of painting and printmaking techniques. It results in a one-of-a-kind image that is developed on a flat plate and then transferred to another surface, usually paper. The transfer can be made either by hand or with a printing press - or even with an old-fashioned clothes wringer. Monoprint refers to monotype work that also includes elements of other printmaking processes such as etching, wood-cut, lithography, or serigraph (from Monotype: Mediums and Methods for Painterly Printmaking by Julia Ayre.)

Cindy Blaineates semi-abstract figure paintings using watercolor and gouache and crayon, typically with vibrant color, but also with more contemplative color schemes. Visit her website at www.cindyblain.com to view a selection of her paintings and monotypes.
