Lon Saavedra: CEO of Hakone Foundation Lon Saavedra joined the Hakone Foundation as Executive Director & CEO in 1999. Since 1993, he served as Director for the Western Region for the Smithsonian Institution's 18th Museum, the National Museum of the American Indian. Before being appointed to this position, Saavedra served as Director of Corporate & Foundation Relations for the Stanford University Medical Center. During his years in Washington, D.C., Saavedra served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for United Telecommunications Advertising, a joint venture between TCI, United Cable & United Artists. In 1985, he served as Director of the Business Advisory Council for the Speaker & Majority Leadership of the U.S. Congress. In 1979 and 1980 Saavedra served as a Desk Officer, for the Western Region, for President Carter while in the White House. Before that, he was Legislative Assistant and Media Liaison for his hometown Congresswoman, Pat Schroeder. In 1977, he worked for Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (President Nixon's Ambassador to India/President Ford's Ambassador to the United Nations) as a Staff Assistant. Saavedra attended Georgetown University Law Center, Colorado State University and Regis Jesuit. Saavedra has a 16-year-old son, is the 7th of 9 children whose family has lived in Colorado for 9 generations. Of Mestizo heritage his family is from two American Indian Nations (Ute & Pueblo) and Spain, he shares ancestry with Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, author of the first novel in European Literature: Don Quixote de La Mancha. Another early ancestor, Hernandarias Saavedra, came to America from Galicia, Spain 14 generations ago. Hernandarias participated in the Coronado expedition which explored America's Southwest in 1541. He also serves as VP and CFO of ST-Infonox, Inc., the Mission Security Platform Company. Peter has previously participated as a direct or indirect investor in a number of successful companies, including: * Cerent (acquired by Cisco) Additional areas of equity interest have been in: Semiconductor capital equipment (NuTool, Inc., a leader in copper technology, which reportedly entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by ASM International in 2004; Optonics, Inc., a diagnostic tool company purchased by Credence Systems Corp., Nasdaq ticker "CMOS" in 2003), and voice recognition software (Sehda, Inc., founded by a former manager at Entropic, which was subsequently sold to Microsoft) ShotSpotter, a provider of advanced gunshot location systems for law enforcement and military applications. Peter has worked at four investment banks, including what are now: Morgan Stanley Dean Witter (as one of the youngest financial officers), and the firm formerly known as Robertson Stephens (a leading high tech underwriter) at the Venture Services Group on Sand Hill Road. Peter has served on numerous boards and advisory boards, including: * a regional television station Peter holds a J.D. from Santa Clara University's School of Law and an M.S. from MIT. He was a member of Phi Delta Phi, a law school honor's fraternity. He is a graduate of the NVCA/NASBIC Venture Capital Institute. As an active member of the community, Peter has served on a number of non-profit boards, including DeSaisset Museum, the Santa Clara Chapter of the Boy Scouts of America, Santa Clara University's School of Law Dean's Advisory Board, Bellarmine College Preparatory's Board of Fellows, Hakone Foundation as its Vice President and the San Jose Repertory Theatre. He is also a member of Rotary International. Mr. Verbica also serves on the Hoover Institution Council, Co-Chaired the Business Executives for National Security David Packard Leadership Award Dinner, and was a lead underwriter of the 2003 National Defense University Foundation's Patriot Award Dinner. Peter enjoys athletic activities, including USTA mixed doubles tennis, long-distance running and ice hockey. His ice hockey team won the Fall-Winter 1999-2000 ICAHL Championship in its division. The heart of California's second largest State park, Henry W. Coe State Park, was homesteaded and subsequently donated by his family.
