Additional Information
ADA Accessibility
Due to the nature of our historic site initially built as a private residence in 1917 on a steep hillside using traditional Japanese landscape materials such as stone and gravel, some parts of our estate are not fully ADA accessible. ADA parking and restrooms are available on site. Please see the garden map below for ADA accessibility details or contact our gift shop for more information.
Photography Policy
Photography for personal use is encouraged. Quick snapshots of your object using a “point and shoot” camera or a smartphone do not require a permit fee. However, commercial, political, or portrait photography (such as wedding, engagement, graduation, family portrait, and other special occasion), or videography requires a permit. Please fill out the photoshoot application form to request and schedule your photo shoot. We will contact you to confirm availability for your requested date and time. If your organization plans on a film production or media shoot, we have a separate guideline and fee schedule. Please inquire at the event office with any questions at 408.741.4957 or by email.
Picnic Area
A garden view picnic area with 5 standard size picnic tables is open for guests to enjoy, on a first come first served basis (no reservations). No food or beverages are allowed in the garden. For larger groups, please contact our Events Office for pricing on spaces available for rents at events@hakonegardens.org.
Pets
No pets or animals are allowed in the Gardens except leashed service dogs.
Buses
Bus access is limited due to the sharp turns and steep elevation grade of our entry road. Buses longer than 30 feet and larger than 24 passengers are not allowed. Please contact our Events Office for questions about large vehicle access.
Visitor Guidelines
-
We ask that all guests stay on the designated pathways at all times. Visitors should be mindful of uneven surfaces while walking on our traditional gravel ground coverings and stone steps. Proper footwear is highly recommended.
-
Children must be supervised at all times. For large groups of children, we suggest at least one adult per five children. We kindly ask that children refrain from running for safety purposes. For young children, we invite you to use our free Children's Handout material.
-
Please do not throw any objects, including coins or food, into the koi pond, as foreign objects are hazardous to the delicate health of our koi fish. During spring and summer months, koi fish food is available for purchase in our gift shop.
-
As our historic gardens are a type of living museum, please refrain from picking and flowers, plants, or fruits from any of the gardens.
-
No pets or animals are allowed in the gardens except leashed service dogs.
-
Please do not sit on the handrails of bridges, buildings, or trails, or climb on any structures or garden objects including stones. Many parts of our estate and gardens are over 100 years old and are irreplaceable.
-
Except for bottled water, food and beverages are allowed in the designated picnic area only. The picnic area is for general public use and cannot be reserved.
-
There is no smoking in the gardens.
-
Please be aware that parts of the Bamboo Garden may be closed seasonally (April-May) to protect new growth.
